About the Project

Objectives

  • Reduce hydrogen production and transport costs
  • Generate hydrogen in a decentralized manner
  • Reduce water consumption (scarce resource)
  • Utilize waste, generating circular economy
  • Treat effluents by reusing them in the process

Project Goals

  • Achieve projected H2V cost for 2030 of $2 to $3 per kg
  • By 2035 achieve production cost of $1 to $2 per kg

Project Flow

The H2Bios project follows an integrated flow of three main stages, each under the responsibility of a specific ICT, with coordination by HVB Energy and accreditation by INMETRO.

Dark Fermentation

Responsible: EMBRAPA

First stage of the process, using biomass for initial biohydrogen production.

Dry Biogas Reforming

Responsible: ICT2

Second stage of the process, transforming biogas into hydrogen through dry reforming.

Electrolysis with MEC

Responsible: UPF

Third stage of the process, using wastewater for hydrogen production via electrolysis.

INMETRO

Laboratory accreditation and certification of hydrogen produced in all stages.

Biological Route

Dark Fermentation - EMBRAPA

  • No energy consumption
  • Low operational cost
  • No water consumption
  • Low production cost
  • Possibility to produce Biohythane

Stage 2

Thermochemical Route

Dry biogas reforming - ICT2

  • No water consumption
  • Uses raw biogas CH4 and CO2 (without H2S)
  • Avoids purification process for biomethane
  • Com otimização, 1m³ de biogás produz 2m³ de H2
  • Produz gás de síntese

Stage 3

Electrochemical Route

Eletrólise da água residuária com MEC - UPF

  • Consumo 50% menor de energia que a eletrólise convencional
  • Tratamento do efluente
  • Reaproveitamento da água
